Ruthless Vows review
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: historical fantasy, love stories, magical amnesia
Divine Rivals review
I've been dying to get my hands on this book since I finished Divine Rivals! The ending of DR definitely packed a sucker punch, so I was interested to see what was in store for Roman and Iris in this one. For anyone wondering, there is an HEA!
This book opens shortly after where DR left off. Iris is back in Oath with her brother, Forest, and is still (obviously) upset about losing Kitt. But Iris isn't down for the count and is determined to continue reporting on the war effort and determined to find Kitt again. Iris again shows her mettle, both when trying to find and help Kitt and when she decides to go back to the front with Attie.
Kitt is, as expected, not quite himself. He's still a writer, but his words are no longer entirely his own, and his memories are just as wiped as Forest's were in book 1. It was good to see that he was still himself though. Kitt may have been Dacre's minion to start, but he very quickly begins questioning things around him and his true self shows through, even if he still doesn't remember. I think book 1 really highlighted Iris while this one highlights Kitt and his journey. I liked getting more of Kitt's POV in this book, and I think there are some scenes that really go to show his growth in DR and in this book.
Attie is also back in this one and we get to see more of her life. Not only do we get to meet her family, but she also plays a pretty important role in this one. I enjoyed getting to see more of Attie and more of her and Iris' friendship. She even got a bit of her own romance in this book. I'd definitely be interested in a novella or companion book about Attie.
Tobias is a new character in this book, and is Attie's burgeoning love interest. He's an auto driver who helps the Inkridden Tribune get stories, and correspondents, to and from the front.
We also get to know more about Enva and Dacre in this one. Kitt is, obviously, with Dacre and we actually get to a good number of scenes between him and the god. Dacre is just as insidious as he's painted in the first book and it's clear just how much thought he's put into how he's going to destroy Enva, regardless of who gets in his way. Enva is...less of a presence in this book, but we do see her and get to know more of her story and why she hasn't personally stepped in to help those fighting on her side.
This book is split between Oath and Dacre's realm. Oath begins as the familiar city we were introduced to in Divine Rivals, but after Iris and Attie return from the front the second time, it's a changed city. There's a power struggle between those, like the mayor and Kitt's family, who support Dacre; the newly-founded, anti-god/dess Graveyard group; people like Helena at the Inkridden Tribune, who support Enva; and then the regular citizens are caught in the middle. The Graveyard group seems to have come out of nowhere, but there are hints that it's been around for a while and is only just now popping up. I would've liked to see more development of things in Oath, especially since I think the Graveyard group has a lot of interesting implications, particularly considering how they very quickly have everyone cowed. I also think the implications of war reaching Oath were interesting, and while I understand why this was a relatively short portion of the book, I think it would've been interesting to explore that more.
Dacre's realm is underground, relying on ley lines and special doors for travel. As grim as it could be, I liked seeing the various aspects of the underworld. There are parts of it made completely of stone, then there are halls/tunnels with unusual creatures and large gemstones, and then there are areas with seemingly unnatural features, such as sulfur vents and hot springs and mountainous regions. I definitely liked that Kitt got to see so much of it since it really was an interesting place, and it showed a lot of the past and present magic of the world.
Overall I found this to be a satisfying sequel and finale to the duology. It's not without its tragedies but it does have happy moments and a happy ending. I do wish that Iris and Kitt were together for more of the book, but it's pretty fast paced, so it doesn't feel like too long. I did enjoy seeing them together though and this time they're fully on each other's side!

(i cannot be bothered to figure out google docs at the moment, so my story about candles shall live here. tw for uh.. gore perhaps? and almost religious fervor? she is a Lot.)
Despite herself, it had become a habit.
Every few days, the monotony of her scrying and scheming was interrupted by an urge to see it- starting as the memory of its existence. Almost taunting her, merely a few miles away. Candles would attempt to ignore the thought, diving deeper into her magical testing or paranoid scrying- Time was always of the essence, and she always burned with an urgency to use it fully. Eventually it would return, the urge to lay her eyes upon that which vexed and entranced her in equal measure. But as it often did in the Light flight, the weather would clear around Clan Nettle. The lavender coatl would finally give in, and prepare a small lunch and a few meagre supplies- At the most her trips would take a few hours, and she timed it so that her return would line up with night falling.
Spring had finally arrived to this section of Sornieth, and with the fresh scent of new growth, Candles would emerge from the depths of the clan's cave system. She’d moved as ever with urgency and purpose, and most in the clan took no note of her presence save for a few hellos from the more friendly members, which were met with a curt but generally cheerful reply.
Candles reassured herself that these trips were research, trying to dampen her own annoyance at the interruption of work. She had no real need to see it- it could even be considered a slight danger for her to linger close enough that it was in sight. Nevertheless, she unfailingly would return to the high ridge just northeast of the clan, cresting the hills with effort before she could arrive at the top, offering a grand view of the Light Flight.
And there it was, a hulking sillhouette that broke the otherwise peaceful skyline.
Luminax.
Half-rotten and torn flesh, the malformed beast roared in the distance with three agonized voices. Its multiple torn wings would flap uselessly ever so often as one of its slavering maws pursued a stray bird, harpy, or perhaps dragon- from such a distance, it was impossible to tell. Not that the three were any different in Candles' mind.
She stood still and almost enraptured, watching it lay waste to the terrain around it. Its massive bulk was only part of the fearsome strength that led it to tear apart the ground and any ill fated buildings in its path- Once in a while one of the heads would charge up a devastating breath attack to unleash elemental force upon the surrounding area. It didn't even seem to be aiming at anything in particular, sometimes- merely releasing some pent up destructive urge from within.
Its hulking form was a decent enough distance away that Candles felt safe viewing it for a long period of time, as she did every trip out here, and now especially. Watching the emperor would bring up many emotions welling within the coatl- Disgust, admiration, hatred- And sometimes, most keenly, longing.
For all her life since the fateful day with an elderly imperial, Candles had longed and planned to finally create her own deity. She could picture it in her mind's eye clearly, an emperor of divine proportions that would blot out even the sun in its radiance. So, when she first saw the newly risen emperor that they now called Luminax, the coatl wasn't sure what to expect.
Of course, she had been crestfallen to see the being itself. Rotting, peeling, glassy eyed and lurching... A sneer of disgust always found its way to her face when she thought of it. It moved only to pursue prey or scream to the heavens, and often the heads would injure each other in their frenzy. Something so, so... Profanely base in its instincts, beastly and ghastly, was a mockery to her dream, her life's work... Yet still she returned to see it relatively often. Sometimes she would simply sit in her hatred, the gods-forsaken beast eliciting an almost addictive rage that she found spurred her ambition.
Sometimes she used it as a comfort- Clearly, whoever had created it, or whatever happenstance had formed it was woefully lacking in the magic and forethought she had in abundance. It was a needed reminder of what could go wrong, and how careful she had to be- Clearly the bodies used had been well on their way to decay when the beast was formed.
Her plan, such as it was, involved more imperials as well- at least six so far, all existing peacefully underground around her workplace. Surely, she told herself, when she finally released them to their divinity, such a creation would rise larger and more magnificent than the shambling horror they called Luminax.
Occasionally Candles would close her eyes and imagine her goal come to fruition- A being all wings and grace, blocking out the sky with its own, more splendid mass. The breadth of the universe playing across its form, massive and unending in its beauty- she would almost shiver with delight at the thought. Towering over the blighted land, each head would whisper divine truths that in her most fevered states she could swear she heard. Such a being, she was sure, would dwarf the so-called deities of the elemental flights- None of them deserved their positions, Candles had decided long ago, and her creation would no-doubt divest them of their foolish delusions of godhood.
And Candles- in the heart of it all, would entreat the newly ascended emperor. Her lord, her god, would hear her pleas and surely, surely reach down with mercy and love to grant her apotheosis, consuming her entirely.
In such imaginings, the coatl found true contentment to imagine her own death. The crunch of bone, rending of flesh, would be a beautiful release from the accursed prison holding her apart from the vast night sky that had called her since birth. She was certain beyond any doubt that infinite euphoria and existence lay beyond that fate, and while the current mock-emperor disgusted her entirely, she admitted no small envy to those it crushed with its slavering maw. Not that they would see the beautiful afterlife she knew was her due- But it was close enough to her dream to elicit a deep longing.
Of course, much dirty work was required for such a goal, and as the sun would set upon Luminax she would consume her brought meal, prepare her things, and head back in time for sunset and the return of her blessed night sky. Never had she stayed to view the emperor at night- She felt to see the beast under her divine heavens would be the most unholy mockery to her faithful devotion of the stars.
None in the clan would take much notice of her return apart from the watch-mirrors, and she could slither down into the caves reluctantly without any fuss. Bidding the night sky goodbye for who knows how long pained her deeply, but she knew once her plan was enacted she would revel as part of it herself- endless, divine, unknowable.
Until then she scried, and planned, and waited. For what, she wasn't sure- But soon. Soon she knew she would act.

Infernal Duke, Tervagan
“Fake Angels” © Chris Cold, accessed at his deviantArt page here
[So I learned recently that the word “termagant” has an unusual history. During the Crusades, the European Christians invented their own version of Islam, in order to accuse the Muslims of being heretics instead of a separate, legitimate faith. They claimed that Muslims worshiped a warped version of the Christian Trinity, made up of Muhammed, Apollo, and a wholly fictional god named Tervagant or Termagant. The application of “termagant” to mean a nasty woman was due to Termagant’s appearance in mystery plays and other propaganda, plus the general trend of English insults to become directed at women over time.
So in that spirit, I present Tervagan, the Infernal Duke of lying about enemy religions.]
Infernal Duke, Tervagan The Enemy, The Big Lie Concerns religious hatred, propaganda, projection Domains Evil, Law, Trickery, War Subdomains Deception, Devil, Fear, Hatred* Worshipers demagogues, fanatics, holy warriors Minions apostate devils, draconopides, warmonger devils Unholy Symbol a broken halo Favored Weapon scimitar Obedience spend an hour writing or reciting lies about another religion in a public venue. Gain a +4 profane bonus on saves against divination effects. Boons 1: nondetection 1/day; 2: veil 1/day; 3 :overwhelming presence 1/day *clerics of Tervagan can take the Hatred subdomain as a modification to the War domain.
Infernal Duke, Tervagan This shrouded figure stands twice as tall as a man, with enormous shadowy wings wrapping his body like a cloak. A glowing halo surrounds his skull-like head, and his eyes blaze a hateful orange.
Tervagan is perhaps the greatest liar in all of Hell. He is the patron of religious warfare, and his ultimate goals are to render all faiths a battleground littered with real and imagined enemies. Tervagan works through ceaseless propaganda, spreading lies and misconceptions designed to make all faiths look foolish and false. He teaches his followers to minimize their own flaws and magnify those of their enemies, especially by attributing to these enemies the followers’ own weaknesses. The greatest of these lies is the worship of Tervagan himself—most of Tervagan’s followers disguise their worship and profess to serve another god, and accuse their enemies of worshiping fiends and blasphemies.
Despite his layers of deceptions and illusions, Tervagan relishes combat, although he never fights fair. Tervagan teaches that all advantages are to be seized on the battlefield, and he follows suit himself, with summoned enemies, illusions and dirty tricks all playing their part. The strike of his hand is sufficient to suppress the divine power of mortals, and his blade Godslayer can cut down the faithful who resist this power. Tervagan enjoys drawing out battle and giving his enemies the illusion of hope, but if sore pressed he can cover the entire field of battle in scorching hellfire. Tervagan knows he is not as well protected as a true Lord of the Nine, and readily flees from those few battles he cannot win.
Tervagan stands thirteen feet tall, and his shadowy wings stretch twice that length.
Godslayer (Minor Artifact) Tervagan’s signature weapon, Godslayer is a finely made scimitar of gleaming red metal. It is a Large +4 unholy mithral scimitar that acts as a bane weapon against all divine spellcasters and extraplanar outsiders.

A successful DC 37 Reflex save halves this effect. Hellfire damage is half fire and half unholy damage—it deals 150% damage to good aligned targets and only 50% damage to evil creatures. The save DC is Charisma based. Infernal Duke Traits (Ex/Su) Tervagan is an infernal duke, a powerful unique fiend. He possesses the following traits:
Immunity to charm and compulsion effects, death effects, fire, and poison.
Resistance to acid 30 and cold 30.
Telepathy 300 feet.
Tervagan’s natural weapons, as well as any weapon he wields, are treated as epic, evil and lawful for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Severance (Su) Any creature that is capable of casting divine spells that is struck by Tervagan’s claw attack must succeed a DC 37 Will save or be unable to cast divine spells for 24 hours, as if they had violated their class requirements. This effect can be removed early by an atonement spell or similar effect. A creature that succeeds its save is immune to Tervagan’s severance for the next 24 hours.

50 Extremely Helpful Tips and Tricks for Breath of the Wild
These are 50 things I learned from playing Breath of the Wild for hours on end. These are all personal discoveries, nothing was Googled (because I dislike rumors and hearsay, I would rather see for myself).
1. Horses will naturally follow along paths, making it easy for you to look around at scenery while on the horse. Be careful, because they aren’t perfect. You can’t turn and charge your horse at once, as they will get mad and throw you off.
2. You can use both remote bombs at once.
3. You can shield deflect Calamity Ganon’s fireball.
4. You can turn on and off your Champion’s Blessings (Mipha’s Grace, Revali’s Gale, Daruk’s Protection, and Urbosa’s Fury).
5. The Hebra Great Skeleton is behind a big door that you have to open by rolling a big snowball.
6. Thunderblight Ganon can be defeated by holding a metal rod up to him (by using Magnesis), Windblight Ganon can be defeated by perfectly timed arrow shots, Waterblight Ganon can be defeated by similar attacks, and Fireblight Ganon can be defeated by having Remote Bombs get sucked up and detonated in his fire ball.
7. You can use Cryonis to break Vah Ruta’s ice blocks instead of wasting arrows, and using Magnesis with metal objects against Vah Rudania’s Sentries is quite useful.
8. Giving 10 Luminous Stones to the Zora Ledo will get you 1 Diamond worth 500 Rupees, but just selling 10 Luminous Stones will get you 700 Rupees.
9. It’s technically possible to defeat Calamity Ganon using only Tree Branches.
10. Blood Moons will sometimes occur in the middle of the day without warning. This is because there was a malfunction and the Blood Moon fixes the problem.
11. Cooking during a Blood Moon (during 11:30 to 12:00) will cause the food to be of highest quality.
12. Royal Guard’s weapons deal a lot of damage, but they have very low durability. Royal weapons are more balanced and look impressive.
13. The Hylian Shield (earned in Hyrule Castle’s Lockup by defeating a Stalnox) can break, but you can buy a new one from Grante at Tarry Town, along with a bunch of other awesome gear!
14. Ancient Arrows instantly kill anything they hit (Guardians too if you hit them in the eye). Guardians will drop ancient tech, but anything else will just die without dropping anything, so only use Ancient Arrows when necessary!
15. It takes practice to do a Perfect Dodge and Shield Parry, so if you’re not the best, don’t worry!
16. The three Dragons (Farosh, Dinraal, and Naydra) drop scales and fragments when you hit them with regular arrows, depending on where on their bodies you hit them. Don’t get too close though, because touching them will hurt you. Offering scales at each of the Springs shows you the way to Shrines (except with the Spring of Wisdom, at which you need to defeat the parasite infecting Naydra to get in).
17. The Sheikah text found almost everywhere in the game directly translate to English (except for Impa’s parchment, which translates into Japanese). For example, the Pins you can place on the map have Sheikah text that translates into “It’s dangerous to go alone” (a reference to the first Zelda game).
18. The best weapon (damage) is the Savage Lynel Crusher, which deals 78 points of damage. However, there is a special Royal Guard’s Claymore that deals 114 points of damage.
19. Lynels are the hardest things to beat in Breath of the Wild. You can defeat them by stunning them with arrows and mounting them, attacking while mounted, OR you can defeat them by doing a bunch of Perfect Dodges with flurry attacks (make sure you have multiple strong weapons, as Lynels have crazy health).
20. Having full outfits enhanced by Great Fairies will allow you to have set bonuses, giving you special abilities when you wear an enhanced set.
21. Horses can die. Fortunately, the Horse God Malanya located past the Nette Plateau will bring them back to life!
22. The best places to find the three dragons (again, Farosh, Dinraal, and Naydra) are (in order) Floria Bridge and the Bridge of Hylia, Tabantha Great Bridge and the Eldin Great Skeleton, and Lanayru Promenade and Mount Lanayru.
23. Locations of Lynels include Lanayru Road East Gate, Oseira Plains, Gerudo Summit, Laparoh Mesa, East Deplain Badlands, North Akkala Valley, Ploymus Mountain, Coliseum Ruins, and the First and Second Gatehouses of Hyrule Castle. Depending on where in the game you are, the Lynels are of varying strengths (except Ploymus Mountian, which always has a normal Lynel). Lynels drop a whole bunch of loot!
24. The DLC has so much extra stuff including extra quests, gear, and Master Mode with GOLDEN LYNELS that have 7,500 points of health!
25. Silver enemies have insane health, but they drop awesome loot (such as gems that you can sell for Rupees).
26. There are three Labyrinths (Lomei Labyrinth Island, North Lomei Labyrinth, and South Lomei Labyrinth). These Labyrinths are easier than you think, and you obtain the Barbarian Armor just for navigating them.
27. The Labyrinths hold more than just Shrines (for example, the Lomei Labyrinth Island has a secret underground area with a ton of active Guardians and a chest with a Diamond Circlet in it).
28. Although difficult, it’s possible to cut down a tree, use Stasis on the tree before it falls, hit it with a blunt object a bunch of times, then climb it to travel short distances VERY fast. However, if you don’t do it right, you could take damage.
29. The White Horse can be found on Sefula Hill. It’s a good quality horse, but make sure you have extra stamina and stealth to mount it. Take it to the Outskirt Stable, register it, and take it to an old man named Toffa to get the Royal Gear.
30. The Giant Horse can be found in Taobob Grassland and can be registered as an actual steed at a stable. It doesn’t have any stamina at all, but it runs faster than any other horse gallops, so... (and be careful of the Lynel that prevents you from leaving).
31. You can ride some wild animals including deer and bears, however, you cannot register them.
32. Although you can’t register him as a horse, the Lord of Satori Mountain can be mounted like a horse (with stealth and lots of stamina, of course).
33. Lynels (again, I know) are unaffected by elemental weapons, and always carry elemental arrows. If you want to attack a Lynel, face them head on instead of attacking from a distance, because they attack by shooting an arrow up into the sky that follows you and lands directly on you every time.
34. Breath of the Wild is full of references to other past Zelda games (wink, wink).
35. The underneath of Hyrule Castle (the arena for your fight with Calamity Ganon) has Sheikah text that reads “LABORATORY” on the floor and a map of Hyrule (including the Divine Beasts) on the walls).
36. To navigate the Lost Woods, pick up a torch and light it on one of the provided fires. Whichever direction the embers and smoke go, that is the direction to go!
37. You can actually buy and own a house in this game. The house is in Hateno Village and it costs 3,000 Rupees and 100 Rupees for each upgrade.
38. Avoid Hyrule Field if you don’t want a run-in with Guardians.
39. There are five types of Guardians (Decayed Guardians, Guardian Stalkers, Guardian Skywatchers, Guardian Turrets, and Guardian Scouts). Guardian Scouts are found in Shrines, Guardian Turrets are found all over Hyrule Castle, and the other types are found throughout Hyrule. Sentries are miniature Guardians dispatched by Vah Rudania, so those weren’t counted.
40. The Silent Princess is found in sacred places such as Great Fairy Fountains and near the Master Sword pedestal.
41. It takes 13 hearts to lift the Master Sword. Yellow added hearts don’t count. The Master Sword can’t break, but it will run out of energy and become unusable until it recharges. The Master Sword normally has 30 points of damage, but when near Guardians or Calamity Ganon (or in Hyrule Castle), it glows and has 60 points of damage.
42. In Hateno Village, there is a statue (similar in appearance to the Goddess Statues) that will exchange hearts, stamina, and Rupees.
43. When you have found all of the Shrines, the Sheikah Monks will gift you the Tunic of the Wild, which is Link’s famous green outfit (recieve this at the Forgotton Temple).
45. At Kilton’s Fang and Bone store, you can buy monster masks that will make you blend in with the monsters they look like. This will make specific monsters act friendly towards you. Be careful though, as Lynels are too smart to be fooled by the Lynel mask for too long.
46. The key to Eventide Island is to be patient and attack enemies from a distance. Reach Eventide Island by gliding from Cape Cales (carry extra stamina).
47. Upon arriving on shore of Eventide Island, a mysterious voice will inform you that you will be stripped of everything in your inventory. Don’t panic! Leave some gear in the water before you walk on shore and then retrieve it after the challenge starts.
48. To completely obtain the Zora gear, get the Zora Armor from the Zora King, the Zora Greaves from the Zora Laflat after showing her a picture of the Lynel on Ploymus Mountain, and the Zora Helm from a chest in Toto Lake.
49. Wearing the Champion’s Tunic allows you to see the number of health points an enemy has.
50. Looking for something? Simply looking on the map helps locate quite a few things, for example, Leviathan Bones, which are huge.

Adventure Ideas #1
This is a lose idea for adventure. Not a perfectly fluent ready to run module. A mere sketch if you will.
For convenience of use, should a DM want to reference this straight from the web, the order of description is somewhat un-natural for reading placing the location up top and the backstories and plots at the bottom of this post.
Lets get on with it...
The Cave Of The Invisible Ugly
Somewhere in the wildlands not very far from simple civilisations of farmers and foresters some streams come together and dissapear under ground and have carved out natural caves over the ages.
It has hosted many different inhabitants mostly animals and some times small bands of creatures.
In recent times from two unlikely events the inhabitants are somewhat different and are tied to a wave of dissapearing items in nearby homes.
There are three possible ways to enter and exit this cave to the outdoor levels. At 1) working ones way down the pond falls to a room. At 6) where the dryed out stream came in from the north-west, and through the small grass covered window that leads straight down to Orvar's work-shop.
1 Main Entrance Chamber
The small stream from the south west trickles down over some grey bare stones into a small pond that sits at the edge of a round cave room. The floor is a flat moist surface of brown sediment that has filled much up what was once flooded with water.
There is a good chance a perceptive character can spot tracks of footsteps in it. Most from troglodyte leaving and comming. Shoe prints from Orvar having done the same and from animals who hide here from time to time.
The former lead inwards to and from some carefully placed stones that make a low staircase up to the passage.
Possible encounters:
A scouting troglodyte is just passing trhough here and will be startled at the adventurers presence
A predator animal is feasting on a cadaver in the cave room that may react violently
2 High Passage
Leading upwards this tunnel ends in a small climb up to a ground above right next to the wooden door. It's easily spotted from tracks and the clearing of boulders that this path has been frequently used. It is the alternative walk around to a wade through a pond at the other end of it.
A small drop in the middle of the passage leads to a low natural cave room. A DC 20 to climb up and out of but not a hard one to jump down into. You may place abducted prisoners and or corpse here. Victims of the raiding troglodyte outlaws.
3 Underground Pond
A very deep underground pond fills most of this place and a stream comming out of the cave wall in the west leads into it. The chamber is damp and drips from the ceiling. A layer of cold mist is in the air.
Explorers may be greeted by a disturbing site in the form of floating body parts. This is where the band of troglodytes often dispose of bodies they dragged in and are done looting. Most sink and stay at the bottom but sometimes fresh ones float up.
At the bottom quite a few valuables can be found still on the corpses however. The band only know so much of what to value. Holy symbols, spell books and other sofisticated items would have been ignored.
One has to swim or wade along the very edges of the cave walls to get across.
If a challenge is desired here the troglodyte band of outcasts has brought a creature from the deeps to help consume the bodies they dump into it.
A jellyfish like being of the under deep lakes from their realm that blindly consumes anything that it detects through smell.
A squall of purple big water leaches that suck every surface clean of organic tissue.
4 Dryed Out Water Shaft
This is to where the more rich streams of water flowed down in the past. A deep drop into the dark is at the center and a clear drafts of air can be heard from below. It's an absurd climb down and up but not impossible.
The troglodytes came up this way using root-ropes and a lifetime of climbing experience.
Should the adventures chose to dare these depts they first end up in a vast network of natural caves hard to navigate and still a far way from the realm of the toglodytes. This new adventure will not be covered here but up to the creativeness of the DM.
This largest open area around the deep pit from where they came is still where the bandits from below make their primary living quarters. Sleeping matts, containers, tools and such can be seen stacked up towards the walls. Some bizare game squares is marked near and around the pit. (Where the troglodytes plays a game of 'live or die' with live catches of animals). In day times most of the troglodytes are here passing time. At night fewer stay put as some are out scouting the surface and their leader is off on 'unseen' affairs with the nearby settlements.
5 Storage
A small cave chamber that used to flood completely before the dry out. The band of troglodytes use this far 'back room' to store valuables in one corner and food reserves in another. It stinks! From the food and from the blood that they did not bother wipe from some of the takings.
6 Dried Out Stream
This is the least likely entrance to the cave-complex but maybe a useful exit. A narrow tunnel leads off for a long while and eventually blends in to the layer of soil above that can be dug through. On a rainy day with some sliding soil by cheer absurd luck an adventurer could posible sink through enough with a wrong step to realise something is there.
7 Orvar's Home
A thick wodden door set againt crudely adjusted natural rock and sediment distinguishes the one entrance to this place from the others in the cave complex. A small window leading straight out into luch hillside above, it's other entrance (one of three possible ways for adventurers to find this cave complex). The place is modestly furnished but makes up a comfortable living area. Part of it closest to the widow is a tight combination of a small library and herb collections with a sturdy messy desk.
Consider the content of this place an equivalent to a component pouch of a spell-caster and the books as a source to various low level spells and how to make them into potions. If you wish some ready minor potions are available on the desk as well.
Depending on how the outcasts came across Orvars medallion the state he is in (dead, captured, barricaded in, or perhaps fled) his home could be broken into and ruined or just ignored or unable to break through.
PC's who have come here with prior knowlege of Orvars tale may find it peculiar to be furnished for two. As if to hint he has a regular guest. There are two beds and two sets of almost everything.
The Tale Of Orvar And Astelle
In a small settlement with tightnitted folks on the border of the forests they once had master spin weaver of very old age. Although well appreciated for her crafts she was somewhat feared and kept at distance for her nasty manners and hot temper.
Nobody had ever seen her with male company and though well past such age one winter to everyones big surprise she came to be pregant.
In the early spring the same year she gave birth to a truly hideous child.
So hideous, and more hideous as the years went by, that people started talking of it not being all human. Trolls, Hobgoblins and even Demons came to peoples mind. While the weaver had named him Orvar behind his back he came to be known as Gobman The Hiddeous. Distrusted and avoided by all.
Just a year later than The Master Spin-Weaver a jolly and respected forester familly also had a child. A pleasant charming daughter. Her Name was Astelle. The irresistable child loved by all.
By coincidence the foresters cottage lay only a few steps off from the weavers house where Orvar grew up and with no one else of the same age Orvar and Astelle played as friends in secret.
Well aware even as children the dislike the grown ups would have had to this acquaintance.
They grew very fond of each other, gave each other gifts for hollidays and left letters under a rock in their secret place. Astelle learning the foresting would bring materials and Orvar would know many crafts to form them.
No one knew how but from somewhere the hideous man also over the years picked up certain darker crafts like that of whitches and wizards. Particularly he was blamed for being able to walk unseen.
One could think that he merely granted them their wishes. To not have to look upon him but this only served to deepen the fear and distrust for him.
On one unfortunate evening when they were young adults and still the best of friends in secret they were after all these years spotted playing. It was immediately assumed this monstrosity of a man were chasing after fair Astelle with a romantic interest and there was outrage.
In the craze of vengence while some wanted to lock the abomination up, others to chase him away, a few sough to end his life, the master spin-weaver was slain refusing to let them in to her house while Astelle in secret helped Orvar to escape the towns wrath. Fleeing to the woodlands that she knew well and a to take refuge in a well hidden cave complex that she had found years earlier.
The spin-weavers son was never seen again but some year later suspicions of invisible stalkers and burglars have lead peoples mind to wonder if he is really gone.
Medalion Of The Unseen
A potent trinket that you as a DM may want to consider carefully before allowing into your PC's hands if you run this idea at level one. It is not without limitations however and those limitations are stronger the weaker the players saves are (effectively with level).
It's origin is not defined.
Is Orvar origin really of troll heritage and has the medallion been given by those mysterious creatures of the forest? Was the weaver a powerful witch with foresight to put her powers into this item to protect what she new would be a child to hide? I leave this to the reader as I aim to inspire creativity and flexibility.
When worn if one covers up it's field of view with ones hand the wearer dissapears from visibility of any kind in the world. Magic, divine or natural perceptions are all blind to the wearers prescence.
Made out of crude wood and artisticly flawed metal working this medallion portrays an eye.
The catch is; The eye want's to see and it will fight back to do so!
It burns the wearers hand and mind in a fire of pain that grows over time. Causing both constitution and wisdom saves that starts at a mild DC 10 but increases in difficulty for every 5 rounds. (The save has to be made every round but only increases at those intervals.)
An observant reader may note from below that our proposed stats for Orvar have him at abysmal constitution and mediocre wisdom. Orvar is used to the pain since he was a toddler however and should be treated as both always having advantage on the rolls and fight it at a reduced DC. (You may opt for a similar approach if a PC carries and uses this item over a period of years)
The Troglodyte Outcasts
Deep down far below our cave and away from mines of dwarves and gnomes there is a vast network. The realm of the troglodytes.
Alien in morals and customs to the races under the sky above but not without norms these deep dwellers form clans under a high chief. What they would call something of a 'familly' is in fact the whole realm.
Not long ago a very ambisious member of the realm betrayed the sacred rules of allegiance to ruling sisterhood. The queens of the realm. In his ambition to gain more influence he and a small group of allies murdered and hid one of the chosen females with the intent to replace her with one in his own sphere of allies. A female who like so many failed to qualify to the sisterhood.
The plot was uncovered and the conspiring group were forced to flee for their lives. In this vast realm only one direction could offer sanctity. Up. To the realm under the sky.
By chance these group of murderous traitors crossed path with an other outcast. One mistrusted for his appearance and his mothers reputation alone.
What came of this meeting is yet to be uncovered.
A conflict or an understanding of mutual benefits?
In any case the band of troglodyte outcasts and it's ambitious leader are in posession of a an amulette of invisibility. One that they use to raid nearby settlements. For items and riches and to abduct people. All the while the suspicions are directed towards The Ugly Who Could Walk Unseen that dissapeared some years ago. Is that monster back to take vengence?
Note: that these suggested creatures are our Troglodytes and as should be obvious not the MM ones. Here is another post on them:
https://masterdungeonguide.tumblr.com/post/178192126310/creatures-treassures-alien-realms-in-the
You can of course swap them out for something else that you think would fit the concept

I played some more this morning over breakfast! I ended up finally finishing up my round-trip of the Hebra region, though I’m almost positive there’s some places I missed. I kind of wonder if Kass has a quest around there...
Anyway, from the northwest corner of the area, I started heading south, since I noticed some other hot springs that I wanted to scope out; it ended up turning into a rather long adventure that involved a bunch of monster hunting, including two skull bases and a lot of pain. Did snag a Royal Halberd and a bunch of gemstones, though. It’s weird how many silver variants I’m starting to see, they almost outnumber the black Moblins and Bokoblins and so on at this point.
Anyway, after warping back to the northwest corner again, I headed to the hot springs proper. There’s actually a lot of interesting sights all around the southern part of the region, though I think it’d be hard to see some of them unless you came from the north, which is interesting. There’s the multiple docks around the lower lake (one of which you can see some of in the screenshot), there’s the rock spiral (a Korok), and there’s a lot of different little monster spawns and wildlife and things. There’s also the various flags set up to help other climbers, which I’d completely forgotten about, hah!
Perhaps the funniest thing I encountered was, while getting better snapshots of the snow foxes and mooses and such, I stumbled onto a small Korok paragliding puzzle near the south summit - and after getting it, I panned the camera around and spotted a Civilian-ized Lizalfos! I’ve never actually had any of the monsters t-pose on me like this (in fact, I haven’t had a single glitch period so far), so that was a fun encounter. Unfortunately after I left and took off the Lizal mask, a couple Stal-Lizalfos popped up and immediately knocked me into the river.
Of course, curiouser and curiouser, I ended up swimming away as fast as I could despite taking damage and what should there be but a shrine in a small underground cave! It was simply a blessing shrine, which makes me wonder if there was a quest I was supposed to have for it, but either way I found it. And even funnier, the same skeletons spawned in front of me as I left, so I had to reequip the mask immediately... and then I noticed the logs nearby, which I then used to raft my way out of the cave, probably leaving the Stal-Lizals very confused. Now that was fun!
In the end I ended up heading right back to the Trailhead Lodge, and from there I warped back to Rito Village. Now it’s finally time to head south... to Gerudo Desert and the final Divine Beast.

I think it goes without saying that Sharon and I were well-aware of the infamous town of Alton, IL for quite some time due to our extended ghost-hunting research. The only detail daunting us from execution was the 5 hour drive down state. It wasn’t until Ghost Adventures recently released a few episodes investigating the spooked town that our fire was fueled! The itinerary was, shortly thereafter, drawn up (thanks to Sharon) with inclusions of Saint Louis, Missouri as well.
Our journey jump-started at a departure of 7:30 a.m. With freshly burned CDs in tow for music accompaniment, we headed out the door with much excitement. First stop – Grafton, Illinois to check in early to our hotel, Ruebel Hotel where we had prebooked an allegedly haunted room #11. Driving into the small town, we noted but dismissed several ‘road closed’ signs as they had no effect on our commute to the hotel. Upon speaking with Moe at the front desk, we were informed that our check-in was actually scheduled for the night before and that our reservation was for 2 nights? Whoops! This conversation had taken place a few weeks earlier as I recall trying to verify this detail with Sharon who assured me we were only staying for 1 (she later redacted and apologized for miss-remembering). In any case, we checked out our room very briefing concluding it didn’t ‘feel’ haunted before heading back out to soothe our aching bellies. Next stop? Grafton Harbor for food and drinks!
On the way to the car Sharon scoffed at her GPS. “This wants us to go all the way around which is 18 minutes, but it’s a 7 minute walk!” We prepared to depart but happened to look back at a ‘road closed’ sign which now made sense. It was then that we noticed the backdrop to our hotel – high waters submerging the streets below it. “Guess that’s why it’s telling me to go this other way” Sharon concluded. Leaving with minimal annoyance, we made our way to a flooded roadway of unpredictable depth. Sharon reluctantly backed the car up to return back the way we came, only to notice several cars behind us. “Wait, wait, wait, let’s see what they’re going to do” she said. So we sat and waited as one ballsy car at a time drove through the wading tides to the other side. We watched in awe and terror. And while tempting, decided in the end, it wasn’t worth it. The panic, that is. So no food.
Venturing forward with a slight chip on our shoulders, we skipped to our next scheduled stop: Piasa Bird. As Sharon drove along the shoreline we continued our perfect view of the high waters. We also noted several barriers stating ‘road closed – local traffic only’ which Sharon concluded didn’t apply to us for some reason. Bi-passing without a thought, we continued our journey hoping upon hope that there was indeed an end in sight as there was really no way of turning back on this one-way road. As we anti-climatically reached the Piasa Bird and climbed out of the car, our enthusiasm dwindled as we both half-heartedly took turns reading the backstory to it. I can’t even recall it now (and this occurred yesterday) so clearly, it was too much detail for my a.d.d. brain or just uninteresting. You decide. A couple photos later, we jumped back into the car and headed to the downtown area of Alton, Illinois!
Next stop? My Just Desserts! The thing is, we hadn’t even had what I refer to as ‘normal’ food yet so by the time we got to this little town and found the joint, I didn’t care much for pie or baked goods. I’ll also blame my questionable stomach but we ended up splitting a spinach, bacon, and chicken salad with an amazing poppyseed vinaigrette that Sharon ended up purchasing. Having fed the hunger demons, our demeanors quickly simmered. The majority of our ‘activities’ for the town were based around the local shopping area. We visiting the Mineral Springs Antique Mall where we saw some gorgeous ceiling-lined umbrellas and had far too much fun in the Historic Museum of Torture Devices! Several random shops later, Sharon had a Doodle Bear ($1.50) and I, an awesome corduroy hippie dress (definitely not $1.50). Shopper high complete, we now made our way to Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument or what I’ll refer to as, ‘pretty cemetery’ for all intent and purposes.
Cemeteries. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all and if you’re Sharon, they’re all ‘pretty’ so there’s really not much to say about the stop. Literally. We can move along now. To St. Louis, specifically.
Now my only recollection of St. Louis, Missouri was occasionally visiting childhood friends of my family ‘back in the day.’ That and it being hot as balls during the summertime. Outside of that, nada. First and most regrettable stop – Gateway Arch. So I guess it’s a thing now that you can ‘ride’ inside an elevator to the top? Sounded cool. SOUNDED. Foreshadow much? Anyway, after a confusing debacle over the ‘parking’ situation ie. being in a ghetto ally and asking a random ‘officer’ looking dude for assistance, we parked in a nearby garage and walked over to the grassy grove encompassing the Arch. I wont knock the splendor of the shining sight and absorbing all the un-obnoxious people enjoying themselves around us, however, I WILL take a few jabs at our attempts at finding the goddamn entrance to the illusive ‘ride.’ There was no ‘pot of gold’ at the end of either rainbow for these unlucky leprechauns. It wasn’t until we actually FOLLOWED the random arrows painted on the ground that we discovered an underground mound. Victoriously entering the ticket line, I glanced at the pricing monitor: ‘Trams sold out for the day.’ Mother****! ALL that effort. Though I will add that we mysteriously ended up departing our parking garage without paying which I can only assume was karma’s apology to us.
So now what? BOOZE. Much much deserved BOOZE. A quick ride took us to Brick River Cider where we were greeted immediately and provided with an oratory comparison of all draft ciders. Sharon and I settled on different, favorable choices which resulted in a growler and 6-pack for the homefront. With inebriation healing past wounds, we moved ahead to the City Museum of St. Louis. Sharon had briefed me on this but I couldn’t recall much – save for it looking interesting.
Upon arriving to the City Museum of St. Louis and parking across the street, you could see a whole, structural display on the very top of the building which we hoped would be open for the season (it wasn’t). You could also see and hear the shrills of lots and lots of children playing outside on the interactive displays. Normally this would put me off but the booze had muted the sounds and annoyance for the moment. I suppose I should take this time to mention Sharon’s wardrobe change from a dress into a different dress with pants for what she claimed was ‘comfort’ purposes. Entering this playground from hell, I can only describe it as a poor man’s attempt at a children’s Meow Wolf inside the locker room of a YMCA. Between the chaotic amount of children, the dingy apparatuses and the confusing layout (which was suppose to be a ‘schtick’ of exploration’), sobriety became king. I’d like to also point out that the main form of ‘travel’ was through slides and tunnels – the likes of which were most inconvenient for probably the only individual at this place wearing a dress! Still, I attempted to play nice’ and took a turn on a ‘slide’ which I’m fairly sure, resulted in me flashing one very happy man (he owes me at lease $5 for that). Fixated on annoyance, we didn’t last long and decided our only salvation now was food.
We chose to eat at Square One Brewery & Distillery solely based on my pre-researched discovered of them having a goat-cheese artichoke dip appetizer which was the best part of the entire meal. My salmon with potatoes and broccoli was beyond basic (shame on you) and Sharon’s ‘barbecue’ pork sandwich tasted of funky, spiced ketchup (I still can’t believe she ate as much of it as she did after trying it myself). The only saving grace to this most egregious meal was our next stop down the street – Bailey’s Chocolate Bar. Surely, no wrong can come of chocolate!
This cute little bar was situated atop an escalating stairway into a dim, intimate dining area. The menu consisted of ice cream booze drinks, booze drinks, or desserts. Both deciding upon ice creamed, booze martinis, we partook in some mini, complimentary chocolate chip cookies which were divine! Drinks were strong AND delicious. I’ve actually never heard Sharon confess something to be ‘dangerous’ so many times.
Feeling much better after chocolate intoxication, the only thing left now was to continue boozing for the remainder of the evening! We headed over to W Karaoke Lounge which I had previously researched and observed a super cool looking ‘performance’ floor that lit up beneath the performers. We stayed just long enough for me to get one rendition of ‘Just a Girl’ in and finished up one drink before moving along to the next booze endeavor.
Thaxton Speakeasy. Another place I had previously researched which looked super cool inside. We arrived a few minutes after the place ‘opened’ and were met by an older gentleman outside the door advising us that the place was closed for a private party. Goddamnit! Foiled again! Guess we didn’t need that drink. Onto the next!
Our last stop for the night was at The Monocle & The Emerald Room where we had purchased tickets to a see a Burlesque show a few ladies I knew were in. We sat, drank and bided our time for an hour and a half – despite the show time scheduled for 10pm. Once 10:30pm hit and the performances began, we knew we wouldn’t last long. Sharon’s mentality drastically switch from ‘if your friends are in the second half, we have to stay’ to ‘yeah, I’m sorry, no, if they’re not on the first half, too bad, I’m tired.’ We were glad to stand in line next to a super buzzed, hilariously friendly gentleman who had absolutely no filter. The theater gods granted us the delight of seeing my wonderful friends during the first half of the show after which we immediately took our exit for the long journey (hour) back to our hotel in Grafton, Illinois.
Suffice it to say, we were absolutely exhausted by the time we got back to the hotel. Ironically, I had a difficult time falling asleep after falsely identifying paranormal activity of my toiletries. My heart was literally in my throat for quite some time. I could hear Sharon had no problem getting to sleep. At some point, tossing and turning throughout the night, I caught some portion of sleep and roused at the usual, ungodly hour of 7am Tired still but forcing the will to journey for more immediate comfort at home, we showered, packed and departed in optimal time. Discovering no roadside coffee availability nearby, save gas station coffee, we waiting patiently (2 hours) for the reward of Dunkin Donuts. I took the reigns for the rest of the drive home and played road tag with a Kia whom I’m not sure when I divulged from. I can only hope that some day – definitely not today – definitely not tomorrow but in the very, very distant future, we may meet again in St. Louis.
Meet Me In St. Louis Or Rather, Don’t I think it goes without saying that Sharon and I were well-aware of the infamous town of Alton, IL for quite some time due to our extended ghost-hunting research.

Yakumo scheming up a dinner and a show
Gensokyo is no stranger to humans being brought here from the outside world, it’s a daily occurrence that at least a handful of humans get spirited away by youkai-sage Yukari Yakumo. Usually they are the useless and forgotten of society; the kind that the outside world won’t notice missing. Per Yukari the humans usually come from the same outside world as the mildly-famous outsider Renko Usami. A recent crop of humans has broken from this pattern however.
Recently, Yukari has brought in a crop of humans that are decidedly different from the usual fare. Rather than being useless and forgotten, many of these humans seem quite capable. They also come from versions of the outside world that are significantly more exotic then the one Gensokyo usually imports from. Yukari has confirmed that she is to blame for this recent odd crop, but remaining true to her youkai among youkai nature she has declined to say why.
Speculation as to why Yukari would take these actions has lead some to think that there may be a problem with the stability of Gensokyo’s food supply. It’s possible that something has happened in the outside world that has caused Yukari to need to look else where for Gensokyo’s food supply. There’s also the possibility that Yukari is simply bored and thought this might be fun.
Hakurei has not changed rules
Youkai readers are reminded that despite the sudden change in Yukari’s imports, the Hakurei shrine has not changed the rules regarding human hunting. They are only valid targets when outside the village or inside if you can avoid getting caught.
The Bunbunmaru will be following this story as it develops.
Satori accidentally gains divinity
What’s the most memorable mistake you ever made dearest reader? Did you accidently become a goddess? If not, then Satori Komeiji of Chireiden most likely has you beat.
Indeed, dearest reader rumor has it that Satori recently ascended to godhood while preparing breakfast in one of Chireiden’s many kitchens. There is yet no indication as to what triggered the change. The few people that have dared to ask the new goddess, have been met with rather un impressive answers.
Per Satori, “The combined faith in <her> is sufficient for it, apparently.”
Entry into crowded religion market
Satori’s divinity marks another entrant into the already crowded competition for Gensokyo’s faithful. Satori joins the ranks of other relative new comers such as the Moyria shrine, and Hinaism against the more established Hakurei and Buddhist faiths.
Traditionally goddesses in Gensokyo have only pursued the faith of the humans of the village. However, the increase in competition has caused some groups to go after alternate sources of faith. Most notably would be the Moryia shrine that has made several large inroads with the youkai of the mountain and the Buddhists that have done the same with the youkai of the area around the village.
It is still unknown how Satori plans to go after faith. Due to the accidental nature of her divinity it’s possible that she may not yet have a plan. Although in the opinion of yours truly, it would make the most sense to go after the residents of the underground first. The Oni are a largely untapped market per recent polling.
Other goddesses begin to take notice
Most of the divinities have yet to issue a formal comment on the issue. Many likely are waiting to see how Satori decides to conduct herself.
One however, the outer goddess Hecatia extended an offer of friendship to her newly formed peer. This has some observers worried as Hecatia’s intentions for Gensokyo have been historically questionable. A fact likely not lost on Satori given her diplomatic yet cold reaction to the gift.
Accidental nature questioned
Satori is the second youkai from the underground to attain divinity through questionable or non-traditional means. She is proceeded by the famous or infamous Utsuho Reiuji, a hell raven that managed to attain the power of the sun god Yatagarasu during the incident that lead to the creation of Moryia’s hot spring.
This has lead some observers to question the accidental nature of Satori’s ascension in lieu of the possibility that it’s part of a power play on the part of Chireiden to tip the balance of power against Gensokyo. Adding fuel to the speculation fire, there are unconfirmed reports that the shrine maiden of the Hakurei shrine has been to Chireiden; possibly out of the same concern for the balance of power.
The Hakurei shrine maiden is well known for her lack of tolerance with those that would threaten Gensokyo’s balance of power
Long lost brother
The Scarlet sisters Remilia and Flandre are some of Gensokyo’s most famous citizens but recent news has caused some to question if there might be a third Scarlet sibling. This news comes after several eye witness accounts of a guest at the Scarlet Devil Mansion that bore a striking resemblance to Remilia Scarlet.
SDM Refuses comment
When asked for comment on the matter our intrepid reporters were turned around at the gate without being given a reason. As of press time the SDM still has not issued a statement on the matter.
Remilia is well known for her open and charismatic nature. This sudden secrecy marks a drastic departure from her recent behavior. This has lead some observers to question if there might be more to the story than initially appears.
Possible connection to Flandre
This would not be the first time that Remilia has hid the existence of a family member. Up until the Scarlet mist incident broke, Remilia had kept her younger sister’s existence a secret from all Gensokyo. Purportedly out of fear that Flandre was a danger to the rest of Gensokyo. This may be a similar situation.
Double dealing ceremony
Sad news dearest reader! The much-anticipated double wedding of Parsee Mizuhashi to Sukuna Shinmyoumaru and Tenshi Hinanawi to Hina Kagiyama has been postponed indefinitely. This no doubt comes as a shock and disappointment to all those that were invited.
Possible repercussions
The Kagiyama/Hinanawi marriage was rumored to have been a political one to further improve relations between Gensokyo and the celestials after the unfortunate destruction of the Hakurei shrine at the hands of Tenshi herself. Experts on Celestial relations worry that if the wedding was authentic, it being called off or postponed may herald a worsening in the already strained relations.
Even if this is the case dearest reader, it is the opinion of yours truly that people should not marry for political gain! But for love!
Further complicating matters is Hina Kagiyama’s fast growing religious following. There was hope among the faithful that the marriage date would mark the first holiday that Hinaism could call truly its own.
Attendees disappointed
The wedding had been expected to be the scene to be seen at this season, with several of Gensokyo’s most famous going on record with their plans for the wedding. Alice Margitroid, the well-known puppeteer and rumored Makai princess even went so far as to sew a new dress. No doubt she will not be the only one disappointed by this news.
Invitations possibly faked
While it is still just a rumor at this point, there are indications that the entire wedding may have been a prank from the beginning. However as those involved did not respond to the request for comment from your truly by press time this can not be said for sure.

Air’s Nitpicks About Breath of the Wild
OK, I really love Breath of the Wild, truly, I’m nearly at 200 hours of gameplay, but there were a few things that bother me. Just like most people, I had issues with the Divine Beasts, they were too short for my liking and not incredibly memorable, the boss fights were OK at best, and it was the same concept for all four with slight differences in the mechanics (tilt Vah Medoh, Vah Ruta's trunk, etc). I wish there was something more akin to traditional temples. I was so excited when I found the Spring of Courage because I thought it was a traditional dungeon. We could have had something like, after completing the Divine Beast for an area, a sealed door becomes active in that region for you to find. It turns out to be a traditional Zelda temple and at the end of it, it powers up the Champion ability you received or shortens the cool-down.
Another thing that disappointed me was the lack of caves and large structures to go inside. I was looking forward to getting lost under Hyrule as much as in the over world. How funny would it be to be trucking along underground and finding one of the elevators from the shrines? And why couldn't we go inside the Akkala Citadel? When I saw it and got some blurb from the locals about it, I wanted to go inside for some loot and lore. But no, all the entrances are blocked. I think it could have been a very neat area. The lack of other intact buildings made this area all the more interesting for me.
And lastly, the music. Yes, it was still great, but I really missed the over world music. I can't pick out what the music at Hateno or Lurelin sounds like. I know the Guardian music and stable music, and I know that the Rito Village has a Dragon Roost remix, but that's it. I know they were going for minimalist with the music to bring out the environment sounds, and I enjoyed it while I was playing, but I would like more prominent music next time around.
With the next game, I hope they blend just a little more of the old games into this formula. More memorable and challenging bosses and optional bosses. Some longer dungeons along with the short ones. And, maybe more side quests that involve more than two people. Take a page from Majora's Mask quests that have you ping pong across the world. Breath of the Wild was still a great game, I loved every minute of it and I can't wait to see how they surprise us next.

Breath of the Wild Adventure Log Day 18
Log 18
It’s been a long time since my last entry and pretty much EVERYTHING has happened.
I’ve tracked down ALL of the shrines. I had to cheat and look up the last 8 because I got impatient. 7 of the ones I had not found were ones that were hidden/undetectable from the Shrine Locator. In the course of tracking down the last 7 I discovered a new stable, the snow bowling minigame, and the shield surfing minigame.
The last shrine to complete was at the Spring of Power. Even though I’d seen Dinraal several times, it was always too far away to interact with. I spent several days waiting and camping for Dinraal but always missed it somehow or just otherwise did not see it.
I finally caught Dinraal in the giant canyon, near the end of the golf minigame.
Got my scale and delivered it and beat the last shrine only to be told to go to the Lost Temple....a place I had already visited a while back.
My reward for getting all 120 shrines is the Gear Of The Wind set so yeah, more expensive upgrades and yes, I’ve spent lots of time upgrading my clothing...as task that seems challenge enough given the amount of Lynel and Star Fragments needed. Ugh.
I’ve also taken down the remaining three Guardians. After taking down Van Ruta I had completed each Divine Beast quest all the way up to the actual encounter.
Along the way I was tackling shrines and completing as many sidequests as I could. I still haven’t completed the Weapon Connosieur because I have not seen a Moblin Club since waaaay way back and I have not found the Cookbook in Hyrule Castle.
I defeated the Yiga Clan (or so I thought) but forgot to get a picture of the Yiga Boss.
I took down a few Moldugas.
I defeated all of the labyrinths.
I have a strong feeling there are still some outlying locations/areas I haven’t really explored well enough to say that I’ve found everything. After all, I have fewer than 200 Korok seeds so there’s that horrible challenge as well but I am waiting until I get my Korok mask from the 1st DLC pack to take that one on. I have been marking Korok locations that I otherwise have not completed.
what else? what else?
Pulled the Master Sword when my hearts were at around 20. I have only used the sword inside of Hyrule Castle. I’ve been real conservative with my weapons and managing the limited weapons is becoming a chore. Is there a specific reason why I need each of the Guardian Weapons?
Also, why does the “Sword” not register in the camera/compendium?
Neither does the Sword of the Six Sages that I got from my Ganondorf Amiibo drop.
A few weeks worth of playing and there is so much I am not recounting well at all. I registered the Royal Family Horse so I now have 3 horses. I’ve also got a lot of cool stuff from Kilton such as the monster masks and the novelty hammer.
I recovered ALL of my memories which is cool although I wish there was a way to just watch that entire narrative in one stitched video.
I haven’t spent all that much time experimenting with cooking but I’ve found a few recipes that adequately heal me up. It always seems like such a waste when I use buffs that I don’t really need.
Endgame.
I entered Hyrule Castle for the first time a week ago. I mainly explored the grounds and the area in the hopes of finding a shrine and that last memory.
I did both. The exterior is so much more challenging than the interior. I found the underground area which is far more interesting than the castle itself.
I hate those Guardian Turrets. They are way overpowered.
I still haven’t found Zelda and I still don’t know what the Divine Beasts are really accomplishing with their laser blasts. I ACCIDENTALLY triggered a fight with the Frostblight Ganon...a fight that I quickly ran away from. It’s not clear to me whether finding Zelda is an independent task from fighting these Ganon puppets or it’s all one part of the final battle.
Apart from exploring Hyrule Castle I’m not sure what else I will be spending my time doing.
I can wait for the Korok mask to find more Koroks but that’s going to be a long task anyway.
The Trial of the Sword sounds like it will make the Master Sword more powerful so there’s that as well.
And I feel like I want my Guardian clothes powered up so I’ll have to do lots of difficult combat against a bunch of jerks.
Getting star fragments sucks too. There’s got to be a better way.
My compendium is lacking lots of monsters which is weird because I haven’t seen new monsters in a long time. Apart from the bosses, the Silver Moblins are the newest things I have seen.
And yes, because of how the game works, I have no idea how many more sidequests I have to complete unless I cheat and look at a complete list and compare it to what I have.
I built Tarrey Town and am loving the free inn.
The anticipation of fighting Ganon is building. Not much longer before I will be ready.
I am currently in the dungeon of Hyrule Castle. Gonna rest for now.

Spell Casting in History
'Magic', in its simplest form, has been used by ancient cultures to control the elements, and bend forces of nature to the will of the user. The Prehistoric man was very much in tune with how they were placed in nature, and often felt they must give up sacrifices and offerings to their Gods in order to keep them happy. These rituals are the earliest forms of spellcasting, as their power of giving thanks helped them in their tasks of farming or gathering food.
African and Native American cultures had their wise men and women to perform their spells for similar reasons. They used wands and crystals to aid them in their spell casting, and offered gifts of thanks for the spiritual powers. They focused more on charms and trinkets, or dolls to be carried around, and could perform spells wherever they were needed. Those who performed the spells were highly revered in their society, as they had proved themselves strong enough to handle the power of the spirits.
Egyptian and Greeks were more direct in their spellcasting, with their magics being used to control the will of others, or giving healing spells direct to an individual through their sleep. The performance of the rituals had little change from previous times, as they still believed that their Gods and Goddesses wanted cleanliness from the user, and offerings or gifts in order to say thank you for the use of their powers.
However, the rise of Christianity during Roman times paved the way for other forms of spellcasting, reverting back to the prayers to God, or the use of rosary beads and the cross. While the use of magics began to be outlawed for their pagan roots, the simple spells given by the Romans gave them the peace to actively co-exist with other spellcasters from other cultures for a set time. If the prayers worked, then they would be given permission to enter their version of afterlife and their form of spells worked for them.
During the Middle Ages, the practice of witchcraft was illegal, and many people fell under the governing bodies for the accusation of casting spells upon others. Stories surrounding these times often tell of spells that caused devilish images to appear in the dreams of the victim, or spells that could alter the temperature of the person, or evil sorcery that caused the death of another. Although it was a crime for witchcraft to be used, those who followed the old path were forced underground, and the practice of spells continued. The nature of these spells were the same as their ancestors. Small rituals to give thanks for their goods, prayers to their ancestors, and also the use of herbs to cure illnesses were used in their daily lives until the re-emergence of the pagan religion.
There are many different forms of spell casting. Each depends on the cultural backgrounds of the person asking for assistance. Although the love spell is the most common, the use of spells are extremely helpful in providing the guidance we need in our every day lives.
A prayer, offered to the spirits or to the Gods or Goddesses of your religion is the simplest form of a spell. In asking those of a higher power for assistance and guidance, the follower is using the magical energies of the gods to benefit their lives. However, due to its strict religious connotations, it is rarely classed as a spell, but more a way of giving thanks to your selected deity.
The art of writing words is a relatively new phenomenon, and so written spells were often seen as being more powerful than a spoken one. Words written on different objects were kept as charms and trinkets around the person to ensure the spell continued, or to make sure nothing happened to make the magic stop. The charms and trinkets that are worn can also be blessed with spoken words, or imbued with magical power from the elements around. In addition, rituals can be performed to strengthen these powers and make the charms potent for the user.
Performing spells can be easy, but others require the use of instruments and divination tools that allow the connection between the natural world and the spirit realm. The wand is most often associated with witchcraft, especially if carved from natural wood with an offering of thanks for the use of the tree. The wand acts as a buffer for the magical power, and aids the spells by directing the power in concentrated doses. A ceremonial knife, or athame, can also be used for these purposes. The wand connects the user to the spirit realm, and ensures that thanks are given for their assistance.
Other items that can be used to create a spell include ribbons to wrap up parcels or pouches, much the same as has been passed down through the ages. Wrapping up the spells enables the power to be held tightly inside until enough time has passed for it to return to the natural state from which it came.
A small broom, often made from small twigs tied together, can be used before a ritual to cleanse the space that will be used. Ridding the area of all energies that are unnecessary has been proven to increase the effectiveness of the spell. Throughout history, there have been many rituals involving the use of a broom, most notably the notion of spring cleaning, which is used to bring in good luck for the forthcoming season.
Candles, feathers, clay, oils, incense, water and crystals are used in addition to these. They aid the spell because they represent the elements being used; the candle for fire, feathers for air, clay or soil for earth, and crystals to hold the spirit. These items are all natural substances, and have been used for many years in all cultures to aid in the creation of spells. All the tools that are used in the divination process, even the use of tarot cards, crystal balls, dream catchers and herb pouches, are designed to pass on both elemental powers and spiritual messages from the user to the gods, or to the intended recipient of the spell.
Love: The most powerful emotion a person can feel; the emotion that drives deep into the heart of the soul and causes that person to behave in ways different to their norm. In every culture, there has always been talk of ways to attract love into your life, or to keep a lover, or to improve the love that is shared, or even to end a relationship. One way to do this is through the use of a spell.
Prehistoric or ancient cultures used their shamans to find ways of altering the course of nature, by asking the spirits to bless marriages, or bring love into their lives. Popular cultures have dramatised the rituals of their times in regard to the relationships they have, with the use of omens before the marriage; for example, the weather must be checked, and prayers must be offered to the ancestors for their blessing of the unions. These spells were considered important to the custom of the time. If something bad happened, then it was considered that the spells were not strong enough, and the gods simply weren't pleased by the unions. Since then, these people have often asked to bring the correct love into their live in order to please the spirits.
Other cultures have their own forms of love spells. Binding spells are most common in occult circles, where the object of the spell is bound to the user by the altering of their emotions to believe they feel affection for the spell caster. Performing this spell could have been mainly part of a violent nature with in the user, a latent desire to control the victim. The Ancient Greeks and Egyptians often used these curses to bring physical pleasure, and ease the suffering of the user by inflicting the same upon the victim. These forms of spells are dangerous, as many times the harmful nature of the spell comes back to haunt the user. However, there is still plenty of evidence to suggest that this magic continues.
Throughout the ages, although the use of spells and magic had to be hidden, the love spell continued. Many forms of the love spell could be found; prayers were offered to the spirits, pouches of herbs could be worn by the user, potions could be placed on the pillows of the user to dream of their loved one, and also effigies of the desired one could be carried around so as to bring their desire to them. Although this is not as noted, the wearing of trinkets, or the addition of perfumes that are in use today in order to both feel attractive, and to attract others, are all connected to the charms and spells used by witches from previous times.
After the later parts of the 19th century, and the re-emergence of many paganesque religions that were forced into hiding, many more people turned to the art of spell casting to aid them in their every day lives.
Freemasonry played a large part in the use of spell craft as a natural occurrence. They believed that it was possible to shape their own destiny and control the forces of nature by living as equals under the stars. Although their spell craft was limited, they often had with them a pentagram with a human body in the centre, to represent how grounded they were in their convictions.
African and Native Americans continued with their own voodoo practices, and their lives, while happily co-existed with Christian practices, remained largely unchanged. They used their spells to cure the sick, and to offer prayers of thanks to their ancestors or spirits. They used their dolls and other charms for protection, and completed the cycle of life with other spells and rituals to aid in both birth and death.
From the 1900s, the practice of spell craft took on more natural forms, and there was a clear shift from many spells that were used to cause harm, and more for healing powers, and to attract natural energies in order to change the self. Although spell craft by and large remained unchanged, with similar rituals being carried out, and tools remaining the same, it was clear that the popularity of the witch and the practice of sorcery meant that more people joined together. Covens appeared, and spells began to grow that included a larger number of people participating. These spells could be more powerful, although the elements of earth, air, water, fire and spirit remained the sole energies that were channelled. Charms and trinkets are still worn, and perfumes are still used to attract others and create a positive effect, and more herbs are being used in natural remedies as spells to aid the sick.
After the 1900s, with the rise of the popular media, we began to see positive images of the witch. Spell books were increasing in volume, and more information was passed to others to aid them with their own spells. Works of fiction saw the witches as heroines, or as people who used their spell crafting to aid the hero along their journey, both being invaluable to the stories. Television made a huge leap into the realm of sorcery, and magic was seen to be a powerful use of nature, and spell crafting intrigued many people.

Chapter Four : Gard’s Tomb
Part 4: Caution. (Parts one two and three linked here. Click for recap)
They compared notes in the house attached to Antigone’s barn. They had retrieved the elf; she and Mya’s patient shared the only bed for the time being. Elyserin was vague as to how she had come across her information, and Mya did not ask.
“I thought the order of Sunlit Sword were all paladins,” Sigrid said. “Doesn’t that sort of...I don’t know, undead-proof them?”
“More or less,” Phlirp said, “But they are still people. You get good ones and bad ones in every bunch. Maybe Gard was a real basket case who found religion. No offence,” she said to Mya. “But you weren’t there. Whatever was in that tomb, it wasn’t sane, and it wasn’t anything good. Nothing like in the iron mine.” They all remembered Sir Valori, who had been troublesome but righteous. (Sigrid had no idea what they meant. The story of how they had come to be involved in all of this had been outlined to her, but most of the details had been bypassed in favor of the more relevant-to-the-minute facts. Nevertheless, she was involved now like it or not, and had almost as much stake in this adventure as the others did.)
“So what do we do?” she said. “This might not be what you want to hear but...why not just leave the thingie where it is? If it’s got this awful fearful aura all around it, nobody’s going to have the balls to go anywhere near. Even Manataur felt it, and he’s not afraid of anything.” Manataur nodded once, solemnly. It wasn’t quite true, but it was for practical purposes. Fear tended to just piss him off.
“Can’t leave it,” came a voice from the corner. They all turned to see Antigone sitting up, propped on her elbows and watching them from over her chest. She looked drained. Three days of high-intensity spellwork had taken their toll, and she was both pale and wan as if she hadn’t eaten properly in weeks. She swung her legs over the edge of the bed and rubbed her face. “It will only spread, if Quin’s calculations are correct. The...dark god, I guess, or chaos being on the other side of the portal is slowly exuding its influence, and it’s using the weakened Artifacts to do it. If we don’t finish our task before it does, we all lose.”
“Wizard would be handy,” Manataur grunted. Antigone gave a tight smile.
“You’re not wrong, but I’m not that kind of wizard. I’m an archivist. A glorified secretary. I can get you all here, but honestly my area of study was never meant for anything like this. I’m better in a library than in the field.”
“What are you saying?” Elyserin said.
“I’m saying I’m going back in the morning. I need to find out who this Tower person is. If there’s someone in this world who knows about the Artifacts and is able to go to such lengths to get them…” she trailed off, looking at something in the middle distance, mouth tense. She shook herself out of whatever thought it was. “Let’s all be glad you didn’t find any trace of his influence in Taraja. It means we’re one step ahead of whatever game he’s playing. I intend to find out more before he catches up to us.” Phlirp, who had been edging around the wall of the room to finally approach the bed without anyone having noticed, nudged up from under Antigone’s arm. She whispered something the others couldn’t hear in her ear and the elf blushed.
“I’m...I have IRON WILL, you strumpet. This is important. I have to go, and you have to do your part here.” And after much grumbling and arguing, that is what happened.
The next day saw everyone as refreshed as they were going to get, though everyone had uncomfortable dreams. Antigone said her goodbyes and left the way she had come, promising to keep them apprised of whatever she found, and they said the same. She also took with her the unfortunate farmer.
After that, there was nothing to do but gird their loins. They took their time about it, putting a fresh edge to everything bladed, meditating, feeling the breath of sharp mountain breeze on their skin, limbering up tight muscles. When the provisions and medicines had all been inventoried and repacked, there was nothing left to procrastinate with, and it was time to go to the tomb.
It was exactly as before, Phlirp thought, and even knowing that it was coming provided no shelter. Knowing that it wasn’t actually instinct but an outside influence didn’t help either, and she should no more crush down the fear than she could any other emotion she’d ever had in her life. It was like trying not to be sad at a funeral. She led the way, winding through the carved gravestones all the way through the arch, through that terrible path and up the mountain to the place that made her skin crawl and her mind begin to scream.
And then, out of nowhere, it was fine again. She was still uneasy, but the uneasiness felt more wholesome, organic, a home-grown variety that was only her own apprehension about going knowingly into danger. She drew up, startled at the sudden shift, and looked back. Mya stood behind her, eyes closed, lips moving noiselessly in a prayer as she held both hands out and open in supplication. Phlirp melted in relief. She saw her companions unclench a little as well. “Thank you, priest,” she murmured. Even without the insane fear reigning her thoughts, she couldn’t quite bring herself to speak in a normal tone of voice. Maybe it was a graveyard thing, maybe she was just being cautious of whatever they were about to face, it didn’t matter. Now that she could think, she had a chance to look at the tomb more closely. It was the same as it had been, the Sunlit Sword insignia and the name above the narrow door worn with time and weather but still readable and undamaged.
No, not undamaged. A thin crack, no wider than a hair, snaked down from the top of the door to split the sun carving barely more than a millimeter, but it was there. Phlirp leaned in close and brought her fingers just near enough to the crack to feel air coming from it, a cold air palpable even in the frozen wind of the mountain. Sigrid stepped forward and joined her.
“Ice did this,” Sigrid mused. “Water gets in the stone’s pores and freezes, and when it expands it cracks. Whole castles have fallen to that.” Phlirp stopped looking at the crack and turned to look at Sigrid in something like disbelief. The dwarf shrugged. “What? I know rocks. You live underground most of your life and see how long you can go without picking up a few things.”
“What kind of ice?” Elyserin asked, also coming close. It was getting crowded by the door. “Hang on.”
Elyserin frowned, concentrating, and the other two could feel the slight, barely-noticeable hum of magic as she examined the door with her third eye. After a moment it stopped and she got the focus back in her eyes. She stepped back and nodded, having confirmed something in her mind. “Yup. Unnatural ice. That little overhang should have kept off the rain, but something created a drop of water. There,” she said, pointing at the top of the crack. “Long, long time ago. Years. They cast it over and over…” She shook her head. “I don’t know anything more than that. Anyone could cast create water. It’s one of the easiest there is.”
“Wonderful. What do we do now? Patch it?”
“They could do it again. It did what it was meant to do, anyway. Maybe the crack was also supposed to crumble the door, but I think it was meant to break whatever that was.” She pointed lower, at the sun carving. “Much older spell here. Divine magic, protection school. Whatever is in there, this was supposed to keep it inside.”
“Can’t fix it. Need the Artifact. Door already weakened. Lots of talking.” This came from Manataur, who gently nudged the women aside. He stood for a moment looking at the door, a light pink tinge rising from below his collar, face darkening with anger. With one powerful kick, he turned the hairline crack into a much bigger crack, and a few pebbles came loose to fall onto the grass. He snarled and delivered another stomp, and this time the door shattered entirely, thick slab giving way under his boot to reveal an empty door and a stairway leading down. He bellowed a wordless yawp at the hole, savage and triumphant, and just as quickly as he had begun, calmed down again. He straightened and brushed his hair out of his eyes. “Problem gone,” he said, as they stared.
The tomb looked disappointingly ordinary. A short stairway led straight down, and the sarcophagus lay at the bottom. It was unadorned, simple, streamlined, the sarcophagus engraved with the same name as the door. There was nothing else to see, and barely any room inside the tomb itself. There was just enough space inside that if they went down, the group would fit inside the room comfortably, but they would have to go down in single file. Mya gave a sharp intake of breath. They all turned to look at her. Though they felt no different than they had, it seemed the effort of protecting them from the tomb’s fearful influence had suddenly become much more difficult.
“What can we expect in there?” Phlirp said, to nobody in particular. “Traps? Magic? Gard springs up and attacks us?”
“Ya, probably. All of those,” said Elyserin. “If it was me guarding the thing, I’d do everything I could think of. So far this has been way too easy. That right there,” she said, nodding at the tomb’s chamber, “Lots of magic. Too much to pick apart exactly what kind. There’s layers.”
“Easy. Interesting choice of words.” Phlirp picked up one of the fallen pieces of stone door and chucked it into the room, watching it bounce. Nothing happened. She did the same with a divot of grass, hoping that a living thing might be different, but it only left a little trail of dirt where it rolled to a stop, undamaged. There was nothing else for it. She took a deep breath and set one foot on the stairs.
Still nothing happened. She kept her senses wide open, a knife in each hand, checking every thought and emotion for realness before trusting it. Behind her, the others lined up and began to follow her down, Mya close enough for the gnome to feel warm breath on top of her head. There weren’t a lot of stairs, but it still felt like it took far too long to get to the bottom of them.
She hesitated before entering the chamber, but could find nothing out of place, except for the fact that there absolutely should have been something out of place. It was, as they call it, a significant absence. She put one foot on the chamber floor, and the other.
And they weren’t in Skald anymore.

Long-running Bay Area thrash metal royalty DEATH ANGEL announce the worldwide release of their eagerly awaited ninth studio album, ‘Humanicide‘, via Nuclear Blast Records on May 31st.
With today’s announcement, the band unveils the album artwork, track-listing, and first new single, the “Humanicide” title track, with a visualizer. The arrival of the new record will be preceded by a U.S. tour that sees DEATH ANGEL, alongside ACT OF DEFIANCE, as both provide direct support to OVERKILL. You will find the touring itinerary shared below the video clip on this page.
For ‘Humanicide‘, DEATH ANGEL returned to work once again with friend and producer Jason Suecof (Charred Walls Of The Damned, Trivium, Six Feet Under) at Audiohammer Studios for the recording and mixing, with the legendary Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound handling mastering. After working together on three previous releases, Suecof seemingly has embraced his role as the (symbolic) sixth member of DEATH ANGEL.
According to the PR release that accompanied today’s news, DEATH ANGEL continue to revel in their place as one of U.S. metal’s most respected bands. Their refusal to embrace flimsy musical trends, while maintaining their signature style of aggression and galvanized technical edge, has placed DEATH ANGEL at the forefront of the metal underground.
At the same time, they assure fans that ‘Humanicide‘ will push the envelope just as they have always done, this time with new elements that include acoustic embellishments, guest musicians, and for the first time ever, piano based moments. Today’s song premiere, “Humanicide”, triumphantly represents the entirety of the album, immediately energizing the listener with its ferocious intensity.
Singer Mark Osegueda comments:
“I wanted to write something that metal fans could really grasp onto. Something dark and intense, that still makes sense. Right now I think it’s so apparent that the earth is in a sickened state.”
Guitarist / songwriter Rob Cavestany, the only remaining original member of the band, adds:
“When I wrote the music for our song ‘Humanicide,’ I was shooting for an album opener that would have all the elements of an epic thrash opus. This meant a classic metal style intro leading into a ferocious ‘Bay Area Thrash Riff-o-Rama’ complete with a crazy middle build up section to ramp up the circle pit until it’s all whipped up into a frenzy by the time the frenetic guitar solo hits, then concluding with a maniacal musical section leading into the outro. All it needed was the lyrics and vocal delivery to match the intensity and Mark went above and beyond the call of duty! Some of his best work in my opinion. One of my favorite DA songs for sure, it feels like the follow up to our song ‘Thrown To The Wolves’. Can’t wait to play it live!”
DEATH ANGEL: Rob Cavestany – lead guitar/vocals Mark Osegueda – lead vocals Ted Aguilar – rhythm guitar Will Carroll – drums Damien Sisson – bass
‘Humanicide‘ is adorned with ominous and stunning artwork created by artist Brent Elliott White (Megadeth, Job For A Cowboy, Trivium). It will be released from Nuclear Blast May 31st and is being made available in a variety of formats, with pre-order active now at this LINK.
